Laura B. Sprague Elementary School
Grades K-2
Remember, Wednesday, February 1, is an early release day for Teacher Professional Development. Students will be released per the following schedule: Daniel Wright Junior High School at 10:50 a.m.; Half Day and Laura B. Sprague Schools at 12:05 p.m.; no Early Childhood classes.
It takes two gyms and three teachers to provide Sprague’s quality Physical Education program to students in early childhood through second grade. Mr. Solis, Mr. L’Heureux and Mrs. Hjelm spend significant time planning the curriculum to get students moving and learning. In EC and kindergarten, students are currently learning and practicing the skills of throwing and catching. The first step is to learn the components for the skill. Then, a variety of equipment is used to practice the skills. Finally, students apply the skill by using it in a game-like situation. Next up is yoga!!!
In 1st and 2nd grade Physical Education; our students are busy applying a wide variety of movement skills. Coming up this week we will focus on dribbling, passing and shooting! We’ll even try catching different objects to work on our hand-eye coordination. Soon after working on skills essential to basketball, we will hone our skills at striking. Striking with our hands and paddles will be utilized on balloons. Students will have a great time practicing their object control skills with the help of their classmates!
In addition to physical education classes, Mr. Solis and Mrs. Hjelm offer a Motor Learning Lab for kindergarten and first grade. The lab provides students with additional practice opportunities in motor skills.
Wear your winter clothes!
Remember, when the opportunity is there, Sprague students will be playing in the snow! Make sure you have everything you need when you come to school to play outside at recess time.
Teachers also take these times to enhance the learning experience, like Mrs. Wylie's class did recently. They were catching and observing snowflakes as part of their Weather Unit in Science!
Calling all 1st and 2nd Grade Girls!
